Laparoscopy and minilaparotomy: a comparison.

PIP: Of the 383 sterilization procedures that were performed from April to November 1974 at the Ramathibodi Hospital, 181 were laparoscopic electrocoagulation procedures and 202 were minilaparotomies with Pomeroy ligations. The typical patient was 30, married, employed, urban dwelling, had used the pill or IUD in the past, had 6 years of education, and had 3 living children. Surgical difficulties were encountered in 3% of the procedures, with adhesions the most common problem found. Mean surgical time for laparoscopies was 12.3 minutes. For minilaparotomies, the mean surgical time was 24.4 minutes. Immediate complications were encountered in 2% of the cases, whereas after 7 to 21 days 10% of the patients reported complications. Fever requiring antibiotics was the most common complication encountered.
